PLANTATION, Fla. — The police on Thursday shot and killed a 28-year-old Sunrise man suspected of stealing a sports car, after he attempted to evade arrest.

The shooting occurred at the Mobil gas station on the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and University Avenue, where the police were responding to a 9:30 a.m. tip from someone who had called and identified the man, Carl Erwin Brewster.

An officer attempted to pacify Brewster with a Taser, but the weapon wasn’t effective, the police said. The officer then reached into the vehicle’s driver-side window and grabbed the steering wheel.

That’s when Brewster stepped on the gas pedal, the police said. The officer, who was still holding the wheel, was dragged around the gas station parking lot. Officers providing backup made their decision and fired, and Brewster was killed.

Brewster had previous arrests for aggravated battery, robbery with a firearm and evading police, and had been on five years’ probation, according to police records.

“This was a pretty dangerous criminal,” said Detective Robert Rettig, a spokesman for the police.

The officer who attempted to stop Brewster suffered minor injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on leave, Rettig said, and the episode is being investigated.
